How classification works

Current earned-class rules for travel and league teams, including payment, overrides and locks. The historical rulebook also includes a Classification section (Section 12).

The short version

Classification keeps brackets fair. A paid travel team's earned class uses its eligible season bracket record, not its points. League teams have separate REC classes. Your earned class is also separate from the division you choose when entering a tournament.

A paid travel team with no eligible bracket games starts at Class B unless an override or lock applies. The Monday-night run after its first eligible tournament closes uses its actual record, subject to the locks explained below.

Which rule takes priority?

The system applies these rules in order, stopping at the first match:

  • An audited admin override sets the earned class.
  • An admin's team lock preserves its existing earned class.
  • An unpaid team is Class B, regardless of record or league type.
  • A paid drafted-league team is FASA REC; a paid non-drafted-league team is FASA SELECT REC.
  • A paid travel team is classified from its eligible bracket record, using the thresholds below.

The association's seasonal classification freeze preserves an existing earned class, including the default Class B for a team without games. Overrides and team locks still take priority; a team without a stored class can receive its first class during the freeze.

Only bracket games count

Record-based classification uses final bracket games from eligible closed tournaments in the season. Pool games, unfinished games, deleted tournaments and test tournaments do not count. Forfeits count as wins or losses, but their conventional scores do not add to run differential.

The three record-based classes for paid travel teams

ClassWhat it takes
AWon at least 75% of your bracket games AND outscored opponents by 10 or more runs overall.
BWon at least 51% but under 75% of your bracket games AND outscored opponents by 10 or more runs overall.
CWon under 51%, OR your run differential is under 10.

To reach Class A or B you must outscore opponents by 10 or more runs across your bracket games. A strong win record with a small run margin still comes in at Class C.

Win percentage and run differential, plainly

  • Win percentage = bracket games you won, divided by bracket games you played.
  • Run differential = runs you scored minus runs you allowed, added up across your bracket games.

Haven't played yet?

Without an override or lock, a paid travel team with no eligible bracket games this season defaults to Class B. Paid league teams receive FASA REC or FASA SELECT REC even before playing.

When your class updates

Classes are recalculated every Monday night, subject to overrides and locks. The Points page shows the weekly class snapshot and its "as of" date. Points and records can update from closed tournaments even while an earned class is frozen.

How the system figures it out

Each Monday night the system runs the same steps for every team:

  • Add up eligible final bracket wins, losses and run differential for the season.
  • Apply the override, team-lock, payment and league rules in the priority order above.
  • For paid travel teams, use Class B if there are no eligible games; otherwise apply the record thresholds.
  • Preserve an existing earned class, including a default Class B, while the seasonal classification freeze is active.

Points rank teams; they are never an input to the earned-class calculation.
